Laverne Norton

Funeral services for Alma “Laverne” Crosby Mitchell Norton, 88, of Pelham will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 3:00PM at Harmony Baptist Church where she was a member. Rev. Nick Snellgrove and Rev. Ed Green will officiate and interment will be in Harmony Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Adam Curles, Casey Russ, Garrett Poppell, Philip Cooper, Jeremy Layton, Drew Russ and Noah Russ.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Luther White, Jimmy Thomas, Larry Sellers, and David Clark.  She was a retired seamstress with Warner’s in Thomasville. Mrs. Norton passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, November 13, 2022.  Born Nov. 29,1934 in Berlin, GA, she was the daughter of the late William and Alma Lyles Crosby.  She was married to Donald Gee Mitchell and later to Douglas Norton who preceded her in death in 2020. She is survived by her daughters, who was her pride and joy, Kathy Ann Poppell (Ricky Lavon Cameron) of Moultrie and Karen Elaine Layton (Torrance Choates); grandchildren, James (Garrett) Poppell of Moultrie; Ashley Elaine Cooper (Philip) of Valdosta; Jeremy Layton of Meigs; great grandchildren, Brantley Layton of Meigs and Grayson Cooper of Valdosta; twin sisters, Jan Short of Valdosta and Jean Miller of Moultrie. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Marie Price, Wilma Sharp, Martyle Barwick and J. Paul Crosby. Mrs. Laverne’s happiest place was at church serving and praising God. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and church family. She always put others needs above her own and cared for the people in her community. She will always be remembered by her compassionate heart, heartfelt prayers and giving to others, strong will, devoted mother and wife and Godly servant.
